The Philosophy
↓ Download PDFInclusive tourism isn't just about travellers with disabilities — it's about valuing the whole of society.
When you choose to be part of the inclusive tourism movement, your work becomes something bigger. It contributes to a future where everyone is welcomed, respected, and integrated.
At the heart of it, we believe that everyone has the right to live to their full potential.
But research and lived experience tell us that society often operates with an unconscious "them and us" attitude — creating social barriers that exclude rather than include. To create meaningful change, we need to be aware of this bias and actively challenge it.
We all have different abilities — physical, intellectual, emotional, and social. And we all face challenges. But it's through facing those challenges that we grow, gain new perspectives, build healthy relationships, and shape an inclusive community.
Conscious Awakening
Even in developed countries like New Zealand, research shows that nearly two-thirds of people feel awkward around someone with a disability. That unease is often unspoken — but it's real.
We still separate children with physical disabilities in schools. They're left behind on school outings. Events are still often segregated, with "adaptive" options that unintentionally reinforce division.
We're not yet living in an integrated society. That will only change when we stop treating people differently, and start treating everyone as equals.
This is a moment to pause and reflect. Once you're aware, you can't unsee it — and you become part of the change.
The Power of Connection
Changing the future starts with the power of connection.
Everyone deserves the chance to learn about others, to understand different experiences, and to appreciate diverse ways of being in the world. Some people may feel unsure or awkward at first — and that's okay. That's part of the journey.
Inclusion is about valuing difference. It's about giving people the space to be themselves and the opportunity to be seen.
Educate yourself. Then share that learning with your colleagues, your team, and the businesses you work with. Be the one who creates space for others — and always offer the choice factor.
Social change takes time. It takes a generation to shift attitudes — but every step matters.
Be the Change
Ask yourself: what are you trying to achieve?
If you stay grounded in your values, they'll be felt by everyone you connect with. Integration begins by offering choice — by giving people real, tangible options to participate, and doing so with thoughtfulness and authenticity.
There will be challenges. But don't lose sight of why you started.
Each inclusive encounter leaves a lasting impression. It changes how families view the world, encourages more people to explore without fear or judgement, and opens minds and opportunities in local communities.
And the bonus? It will strengthen your customer service. It will grow your business. Because when people feel welcomed, they come back — and they bring others with them.
